Mining Mills    of  the West
This exhibit of 32 black and white photographs explores the American West's abandoned historic mining mills--the unintended monuments to man's former strivings to extract metals from the earth. These views were taken by Lee Silliman, a devoted, large format (8x10 inch view camera) photographer who searches for the scraps of history that have not yet turned to dust. The majority of the images depict Montana mills from places such as Coolidge, Hughesville, Pony, and Comet, while also including a few out- of-state gems from California and Nevada. Some of these structures have since been torn down. The exhibit is annotated with historical commentary, which offers further insight into our western mining heritage.  Remember: Almost every object we use ultimately comes out of the ground!
Lee Silliman will be speaking on October 14, 2023 from 1:00p-2:00p at the Jefferson County Museum Meeting Room.
